Directions For Wellness Inc (DFWI) Portfolio
 
Railway Trackman Training
 
Directions For Wellness Inc. participated in the Personal Development component of this program for On Track Rail Training Institute of Canada (ORTIC). The Trackman Training program was offered to the Six Nations of Hobbema;  Ermineskin, Louis Bull, Montana, Paul Band, Saddlelake and Samson Tribes.  The Rail Trackman Training ean from July 1, 2011 - August 3, 2011.  The graduates received hands on training at the Galt Historic Railway Park north of Stirling, AB, in the Lethbridge area.  19 young Aboriginal Men started the program and 18 completed the training.  Of the 18 trainees 10 have already secured emplyment.
 
Workplace Training Services Directions For Wellness Inc. was the successful proponent and commenced service delivery on June 1, 2011. Workplace Training provides an opportunity for unemployed Albertans who are expereincing difficulties securing or maintaining employment such as; individuals who have recently completed school and have no practical work experience, have experienced a gap(s) in employment or for individuals who seeking a career change but require training. Workplace Training benefits employers by partially compensating the training costs associated with the hiring of new employees with skill gaps.
 
 

Employment Placement Program
 
In December of 2010 DFWI was contracted to deliver the Employment Placement Program (EPP) to Wetaskiwin, Camrose and Ponoka and surrounding areas.  The EPP target audience is unemployed Expected to Work Albertans.   
 
DFWI will consult with local employers and introduce the advantages of the Government of Alberta Workplace Training program.  The Workplace Training program compensates employers for a portion of the training costs associated with entry level employees.  The EPP is being offered until May 31, 2011. 
The Louis Bull Tribe Literacy and Numeracy Program
 
DFWI was contracted October 2010 to provide the  employability  skills component.     The Literacy and Numeracy participants are provided online literacy training, cree   language lessons, traditional  teachings from  an Elder and employability skills training.  DFWI is also currently  providing which will complete in January 2011.  DFWI  has  agreed to provide the employability Skills training to the Youth Skills Link  program that will commence in February - September 2011.

Aboriginal FASD Outreach Worker
In 2010 Directions For Wellness partnered with Prairie Central FASD Network, Alberta Health Services and the Aboriginal Women's Wellness Clinic to address the prevention and support services for FASD.  An Aboriginal Outreach Worker now provides support to expand the services at the Aboriginal Women's Wellness Clinic. The Aboriginal Outreach Worker collaborates with  expectant mothers and their families to have a healthy pregnancy thereby having a healthy mom healthy babe. The services are provided for the community of Wetaskiwin and/or surrounding area (i.e. Hobbema).

In 2009 the APWP became Aboriginal Women's Wellness Clinic.
Dr. Badawi and Directions For Wellness Inc. continued to coordinate the clinic with various community partners; Maskwacis Health Centre, Samson Healthy Families, Ermineskin Brighter Futures, Medical Transportation,  Alberta Health Services, and Prairie Central FASD Network. The weekly clinic, provided participants received prenatal information, diagnostic referrals, initial assessments and examinations. Expectant mothers and their families became familiar with doctor and nurses that provide care at the Wetaskiwin Hospital and Health Centre, Labour and Delivery Unit.  They could also access an Elder or Doula services to enhance their labour and delivery experience.
 

Aboriginal Prenatal Wellness Program (APWP)
In 2005, Directions For Wellness partnered with Wetaskiwin Family Medical Practice, Samson Healthy Families, Ermineskin Brighter Futures, Medical Transportation, David Thompson Health Region, Wetaskiwin Health Unit and Alberta Health and Wellness. Directions For Wellness developed and coordinated the Aboriginal Prenatal Wellness Program (APWP). The weekly clinic, provided appointment or walk-in prenatal care on Thursday afternoons. The participants received one stop care for prenatal information, diagnostic referrals, initial assessments and examinations. Expectant mothers and their families became familiar with doctors and nurses that provided care at the clinic as well as the Wetaskiwin Hospital and Health Centre, Labour and Delivery Unit, throughout their pregnancy. They also were able to come in contact with an Elder and/or Doula services.

Youth Tolerant Shelter Model
In 2005 - 2006 Directions For Wellness developed a Youth Tolerant Shelter Model for the City of Edmonton. A PowerPoint presentation was developed after thorough research, numerous focus groups with the Edmonton Drug Strategy Committee Meetings. The Youth Tolerant Shelter Model was presented and accepted by the Edmonton Drug Strategy Task Force in June 2006. With the City’s endorsement the Youth Tolerant Shelter Model has been prepared for submission for funding approval from the Federal and Provincial Governments.              
Safety Program Development
In 2001 - 2002 Directions For Wellness Inc researched, developed and implemented a Safety Program for RD Inspection Services LTD. of Red Deer Alberta.  The Province of Alberta provided the Safety Certification in 2002.  The safety program was expanded within  the company to became an important function of confirming hazards identified from previous out calls.  This important role provided the Non Destructive Inspectors and crews a mobile safety data base for remote tailgate meetings. 



Expressing One's Anger

During 1999-2000 Directions For Wellness was contracted to develop and deliver an experiential based program "Expressing One's Anger" for the Our House Recovery Centre.  This intensive 50 hour program assisted participants to review their current beliefs, values and learned behaviours.  The program reviewed current theories, practices communication skills, journalled current anger situations and participated in role plays to increase their confidence.  An emphasis was also placed on resovling interpersonal conflict.

Metis Nurse Access Program
Directions For Wellness first project was in 1998 - 1999, for the Metis Nation of Alberta and the Metis Settlements of Alberta.  Directions For Wellness developed, delivered and managed the Metis Nurse Access Program in a contractual partnership with Grant MacEwan Community College (GMCC).  The first phase helped Metis participants attained Grade 12. The second phase was accomplished by acquiring the necessary personal and professional development training to become certified Residential Aides. The third phase gave students the opportunity to continue the nursing program to become Registered Nurses.
